WHAT IS A
CONSULTANT
DERMATOLOGIST?

With so many skin clinics and ‘experts’ out there, it can be hard to know who to go to for treatment and advice.  A consultant dermatologist is the most highly qualified skin expert, with years of training in understanding the skin, hair and nails in health and disease.

In the UK, to become a consultant dermatologist, it will usually take at least 15 years of training.  It is essential to complete a medical degree, followed by several years of general medical training. After this, there is a highly competitive and intensive dermatology training program, which typically spans four to six years. This extensive training includes hands-on experience in various dermatologic settings and exposure to a wide range of skin conditions, treatments, and technologies. In addition, consultant dermatologists are required to regularly participate in ongoing education to stay current with the latest advancements in dermatologic science and treatment.

There are currently only about 800 dermatologists in the UK which means we have some of the lowest numbers of dermatologists per population in the world. This means that access to expert skin advice can be a real problem for many and only a tiny fraction of people will get to access a consultant dermatologist.

Dr Emma has experience looking after skin in all age groups and has an an in-depth knowledge of how skin transitions and evolves over the years, as well as how to respond to its changing needs. She is one of the few consultant dermatologists who has extensive experience in the cosmetic field and in skincare, helping to bridge the gap between health and beauty.
