Milia are tiny yellowish-white cysts which occur just under the skin. They contain the skin protein keratin and are commonly seen on the cheeks and around the eyelids. Milia themselves are completely harmless. Almost 50% of newborns will have one or more milia which will go away in the first few weeks of life. Some adults are more prone to milia than others and this tendency can run in famiies. Sometimes using very heavy moistuirsers with occlusives can exacerbate mila.
Milia are harmless and often will eventually resolve. They can be extracted in clinic which is a quick and relatively pain-free procedure. For multiple milia, electrocautery may be advised which will require numbing cream. For people who are prone to milia, the use of a topical retinoid is advised.
