HORMONAL
SKIN

How does hormonal skin affect us?

Our skin is at the mercy of our hormones, so it’s no surprise that when our hormones change, it can have a major impact on our skin.

Hormonal skin can affect us at many different stages of our lives.

Puberty

The fluctuating hormones we see in teenagers can cause acne, dandruff and changes in body odour.

Menstrual Cycles

Over the month, a woman’s hormonal profile will change and up to 80% of women who suffer with spots will notice a breakout before their periods. This doesn’t always mean there is a problem with hormones, rather the skin is too sensitive to circulating hormones. Dr Emma can help with solutions which ensure clear skin all month round.

Hormonal abnormalities

In some cases hormonal abnormalities can lead to changes in the skin. The most common example of this is polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) which is a common condition amongst women affecting the way their ovaries work. This can lead to an imbalance in hormones and result in acne, excess hair and irregular periods. Dr Emma can perform blood tests to see if there is any evidence of hormonal abnormalities.

Hormonal treatments (contraception)

Different types of hormonal treatments, such as contraceptives or hormonal replacement therapy can sometimes causes changes in the skin such as acne and pigmentation. Dr Emma can help to treat any changes and help support you to make the right contraceptive decision for your skin.

Trying to conceive/fertility treatment

sometimes getting pregnant can take a while and for many people it can require fertility treatment. This can be a time of very fluctuating skin, which can add to the stress of the process. Dr Emma can help safely manage your skin during this time.

Pregnancy/breast feeding

Whilst some women will experience a ‘pregnancy glow’, some women will struggle with their skin during pregnancies. Many skin conditions can flare during pregnancy such as pigmentation, eczema and acne. Dr Emma is very experienced in treating pregnant women and can advise you on safe and effective treatments to help manage your skin during pregnancy and breast-feeding.
