Moles (also known as naevi) may be removed for 2 reasons:
1) If abnormalities are detected within the appearance of a mole.
2) For cosmetic reasons.
Before any mole is removed, it’s essential it is checked by a specialist to ensure there are no concerns and to determine the method by which it should be removed.
1) Full excision – this involves the mole being excised from the skin and stitches being inserted into the skin to allow wound healing. This completely removes the mole from its roots and is the best option for any concerning moles.
2) Shave excision – this is a less-invasive way of taking bumpy moles off the surface of the skin and does not require stitches.
3) Laser – for some moles where there is no concern about abnormalities, cutting lasers can be used to remove moles.
